iGEM: the synergy of 3 centres of excellence to identify and evaluate gems and jewellery

TRAINING PROGRAMMES

There is no single route to gemmological knowledge.
A wide variety of programmes are available, either at EGM or at other schools or training centres.

How do you choose your course? This will depend on several factors:

  • The intended occupation or professional and personal goals
  • The level of knowledge and skills desired
  • The time you have available to follow the course
  • The budget allocated

Indeed, some professions require a specific diploma or expertise such as that provided by the EGM. Others require more generalized knowledge. You must also take into account your own desires and know the type or quality of service you wish to offer.

The following paragraph will shed some light if necessary. Do not hesitate to consult our CAREERS IN GEMMOLOGY and EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES pages for further information.

THE EGM PROGRAMMES

There are three main varieties of programmes:

  • Diploma courses offering the level required for international gemmological practice
  • Courses with attestations or certificates
  • Initiations

Each type of programme leads to different levels of professionalism and to specific professions.

DIPLOMA COURSES

The EGM school offers two main diplomas:

These courses are given in an à la carte format (with the theoretical courses at a distance). It allows greater flexibility in terms of organization.
They are aimed at students wishing to acquire gemmological skills.

The theoretical courses that are part of these diploma courses can be followed on their own. If you succeed in the online exams, you will receive a letter of completion.

THE iGEM CERTIFICATE OF GEMMOLOGY

The iGEM Certificate of Gemmology consists of 4 evening courses and 2 weekend workshops. This training is a long term course, for those who work or have another activity. It takes two years to complete.

The evening courses (Gemmology 1, Gemmology 2, Gemmology 3, Gemmology 4) follow one another in their learning.

The weekend workshops (Diamond Grading Workshop and Pearl Grading Workshop) require no prerequisites and can be taken in any order.

The entire certificate may be required, or only some of the courses or workshops that make up the certificate, depending on the positions or trades targeted, such as jewellery sales, specialization in the sale of certain gems, teaching certain gemmology courses, jewellery design, and writing popular articles.

INTRODUCTORY AND ADVANCED WORKSHOPS

The EGM offers 3-hour introductory courses, each devoted to a gem:

These courses combine theory and practice and aim to provide a good overview of these 4 great gems. Observation of the gems and use of the basic instruments are on the agenda.

Another workshop takes place in the same format: the Basic Gemmological Instruments Workshop, for an in-depth learning and practice of the gemmologist’s instruments.

The Custom Professionnal Workshop is dedicated to graduate gemmologists wishing to brush up on their skills.

It is also possible for professional gemmologists to follow the practical WGF workshops, in order to upgrade their knowledge and practice:
