iGEM: the synergy of 3 centres of excellence to identify and evaluate gems and jewellery

THE iGEM GEMMOLOGY CERTIFICATE

The EGM has been offering its Certificate in Gemmology for many years now.
It consists of 4 levels taught between 15 to 20 weeks each, one evening per week, plus 2 workshops usually taught on weekends.
Each of these courses and workshops can be taken for your own pleasure (without going as far as the iGEM Certificate of Gemmology) and entitles you to a certificate.

The evening courses: Gemmology 1, Gemmology 2, Gemmology 3 and Gemmology 4, follow in that order. Starting as an introduction to common and uncommon gemstones, moving to the science of gemmology by learning the physical, optical and chemical characteristics of gems, and eventually learning to identify stones through observations and the use of instruments. Gemmology 1 and Gemmology 2 are also offered as intensive sessions.
Each session ends with an exam, which must be passed in order to register for the next level.
No previous knowledge of gemmology is required to start Gemmology 1.

The two workshops, Diamond Grading Workshop and Pearl Grading Workshop can be taken independently. They contain theoretical instructions, but have a strong practical focus.
A final exam is also required to pass.
In order for students to benefit from these workshops, we recommend that they have a minimum knowledge of gemmology (e.g. Gemmology 1).

Once all these courses have been completed, it is possible to take a final exam to obtain the iGEM Certificate of Gemmology.
The final price of the Certificate is the sum of the prices of all courses and workshops, plus the final exam ($50): $3,230 plus taxes.
