Do you want to become a diamond expert and obtain a world-renowned diploma?
The WGF Diamond Professional program offers you a comprehensive education that will provide you with a solid background in the field.

From theory to practice, this degree will teach you the basics of gemmology in order to understand the chemical, physical and optical properties of diamonds and their confusions. The program covers the following: the history of diamonds, their discovery and various sources; geology, the surrounding mining industry and the main players; the evolution of cutting and cutting methods; diamond treatments and synthesis; advanced modern gemmological instruments for identification; and coloured diamonds.

Part of the training is dedicated to diamond grading. You will be presented the different grading systems used throughout the world such as those of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), the Hoge Raad Diamant (HRD), the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) and the Accredited Gem Appraisers (AGA). The grading is put into practice via the school’s diamond collection.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS COURSE

This course is intended for beginners wishing to obtain a recognized diploma to work in the world of diamonds as well as for professionals wishing to update their knowledge.

Prerequisites: no prerequisites are required, but basic gemmological knowledge such as that offered in the Basic Gemmology course will facilitate the learning process.

Diamond mineralogy: crystallography, physical, optical and chemical properties
Coloured diamonds
Geology and mining industry
Cutting evolution and lapidary
International grading systems
Identification of colourless confusion gems
This course is validated by an online exam.

The practical workshop is followed exclusively on-site according to the school’s calendar for 8 days.

As its name indicates, it focuses on the observation, identification and classification of natural and synthetic diamonds.

A final exam validates this workshop.

Homework and exams

Throughout the course, students are given homework assignments and a mock exam to prepare for the final exams.
The diploma is validated by passing the following exams :
An online exam of 75 questions for the theory course
An online final exam of 100 questions
A five-question theory test at the end of the course
A practical exam of 4 diamonds to be graded at the end of the practical workshop

The theory courses are available to Canadian residents only.
Non-Canadian residents interested in the theory course should refer to the WGF website.
Workshops and on-site courses are open to both Canadian and international students.
Final exams, both theoretical and practical, are held on site (i.e. during the practical workshops).

AN À LA CARTE PROGRAM

The WGF Diamond Professional program is organized as follows:

the theoretical course is followed online, at one’s own pace, with a digital support, and a printed support if desired
the practical workshop is held on-site from Monday to Friday in May and June, with a break of one week.

Once the theoretical course has been validated by passing the online exam, the workshop can be taken. Payment is made on a course-by-course basis, before the course starts.

HOW THE DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE WORKS

The principle of the distance learning course is to allow students to organize their studies as well as possible in relation to their family or professional obligations. To do this, the institute proposes the following organization :
Each student follows the course at his/her own pace;
Each student has unlimited digital access to the theoretical courses delivered by the WGF, and you can receive the printed material if you wish (two options are proposed to you during registration: with or without printed material);
Each student benefits from a 2-hour individual tutoring session given by one of the professors, which can be done in the institute’s premises or via a web platform, in one or several times;
Homework is proposed throughout the theoretical course. Corrections with explanations are sent back by the teachers. These assignments are not compulsory but are intended to help you to learn and understand the different concepts covered in the module.

HOW THE ON-SITE PRACTICAL WORKSHOP WORK

Attendance at classes is compulsory.
Instruments are provided by the school (microscope, refractometer, UV machine, etc…), but you can use your own instrument kit if you have purchased it.
The diamonds and imitations to be identified are prepared in advance by the teachers and made available to you during the workshop.
Outside of class hours and during school hours, you may access the classrooms if they are not occupied, as well as the gems and instruments to practice and improve your skills.

REFUND IN CASE OF CANCELLATION

Distance Learning: due to the lifetime access to the digital version of the courses, no refunds will be possible. Printed material, books or instruments cannot be refunded.
The amount subject to refund applies to workshops. In accordance with Canadian law: full refund of the remaining amount if the cancellation is made before the start of the course; 10% of the amount of the course not taken will be withheld if the cancellation is made during the course.
