GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Advanced Gemmology module goes through the different gemstone treatments and syntheses available on the market, from the most traditional to the most recent.

The issues are multiple. Nowadays, most gems on the market have undergone a treatment. Another challenge in the gem market is that many synthetic gems are not identified as such, sometimes for fraudulent purposes.

Knowing how to identify gems, the treatments they may have undergone, whether they are synthetic or not, allows the gemmologist to determine not only the quality, but also the intrinsic and monetary value of a gem. It is impossible today to ignore these different issues.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

The topics covered are:

  – Synthesis of coloured gems by fusion and dissolution
  – Diamond syntheses
  – Other less common syntheses
  – Treatments of sapphires, rubies, diamonds, opals, jades and others
  – Techniques for identifying these treatments and syntheses

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

This module is aimed at both the curious who wish to learn more about the world of gems and at students who wish to become professional gemmologists.

Prerequisites: Coloured Gemstones.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The principle of the distance learning course is to allow students to organize their studies in relation to their family or professional obligations. To do this, the institute proposes the following organization:

– Each student follows the course at his/her own pace.

– You have access to the digital version of the course for an unlimited period of time, and can receive the printed version if you wish (two options are offered at the time of registration: with or without printed material).

– Each student benefits from a 2-hour individual tutorial given by one of the professors, which can be done in the institute’s premises or via a web platform, in one or several sessions.

– The learning of theory is accompanied by practice. It is necessary to have gems and instruments to train and optimize your studies. For those who need it, we offer a kit of 20 gems designed by the institute as well as a basic kit of gemmological instruments.

– 2 online MCQ exams allow you to validate this module.

VALIDATION AND FOLLOW-UP

If you complete the online exams successfully, you will receive a letter of completion for your Advanced Gemmology module.

You can continue your learning with the course Gem Identification.

Indeed, Advanced Gemmology is part of the training for the WGF Career Gemmologist diploma.

REFUND IN CASE OF CANCELLATION

Distance learning: as the course is accessible for an unlimited period of time, it cannot be refunded. Similarly, the material acquired by the student (printed material, gem kit, instruments or books) cannot be taken back.
ATTESTATION

A score of more than 70% in the 2 online exams of 50 questions each entitles you to a certificate. This allows you to follow the other modules leading to the WGF Career Gemmologist diploma.
